Far and Away
John Williams har med sit score til Far and Away begået et herligt forfriskende score, bestående af en god del irsk folkemusik
(med hjælp fra gruppen The Chieftains), solid orkestermusik á la Williams, og et par numre, der lader én vide, at Williams kan mere og
andet end bare "almindelig" filmmusik.
I åbningsnumret på Far and Away, "County Galway, June 1882" og "Joe Sr.'s Passing/The Duel Scene (nr. 3), kaster Williams sig
ud i brugen af sækkepibe, der efter min mening bliver et smukkere og smukkere instrument for hver gang jeg hører det. Williams' brug af
instrumentet er dog mindre flydende, og virker mere konventionelt end kollega James Horners meget organiske brug af samme instrument
på f.eks. Titanic eller Braveheart. Ikke desto mindre synes jeg Williams
får instrumentet fint integreret i soundtracket.
Derudover er der nogle herlige numre på scoret der gør brug af irsk folkemusik, hvilket giver hele soundtracket en herlig musikalsk
vinkel, der i øvrigt gør én i godt humør når man hører det - bl.a numrene "The Fighting Donnelys" (nr. 2), "Joe Sr.'s Passing/The Duel
Scene (nr. 3) og "Fighting for Dough" (nr. 7).
En anden ting, der er med til at give scoret en speciel stemning er nummeret "Blowing off Steam" (nr. 6) samt en del af
"End Credits" (nr. 19), hvori Williams kompositioner antager næsten symfoniske højder og byder på virtuost spil af strygersektionen - herligt,
opløftende musik.
Scoret går dog en smule dødt på numrene "Am I Beautiful?" (nr. 8), "Inside the Mansion" (nr. 10) og "Shannon is Shot" (nr. 11) -
nummer 8 og 10 har nærmest en vuggeviseagtig klang over sig. Dog brydes denne lidt døde periode af nummeret "The Big Match"
(nr. 9), der er et udmærket dramatisk nummer på klassisk Williams-manér.
Ud over denne lidt døde periode omtrent midt på albummet er der kun én anden ting, der trækker lidt ned, nemlig at hovedtemaet benyttes
meget på scoret. Hovedtemaet er egentlig ikke dårligt, men det er heller ikke udpræget opfindsomt - til tider (f.eks. på "Joseph's Dream"
(nr. 12)) lyder det nærmest lettere inspireret af Michael Kamens score til Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves, og man når på visse
tidspunkter at blive en smule træt af det.
Enyas "Book of Days" trækker hverken op eller ned på albummet. Personligt har jeg aldrig brudt mig særlig meget om Enya, og lige
præcis dette nummer minder mig kun om Statoils reklamer, hvilket heller ikke ligefrem er så snildt. Nummeret bryder dog efter min mening
egentlig ikke scoret, men for at helgardere sig kunne man måske have lagt det som det sidste nummer.
Alt taget i betragtning er Far and Away dog et glimrende score, herligt forfriskende og ét man bliver i godt humør af at lytte til.
Endnu et bundsolidt stykke arbejde fra John Williams.

In 1988 Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and I flew to Ireland and explored the West Coast, where the opening scenes of Far And Away take
place. We had a draft of a screenplay back then, but we were a long way away from making a movie out of it. Our trip to Ireland, we
hoped, would focus the three of us - director, producer and writer - and inspire us.
One evening in Galway we went into a pub for a pint of Guiness. The place was packed with people of all ages. All of a sudden the noisy
room got quiet, and all eyes turned to an elderly gentleman who, seated in front of a glass of ale, was singing a mournful song. It was a
song of love. It was a song of rebellion. It was a song of anger, sadness and indignation. We didn't know the song, but the Irish people did,
and they respected the song, and they respected the old gentleman for singing it.
Because of that man and his song, we chose to begin our movie by placing the hero's father in a pub and having him sing. Music, I think,
is deep in the bones of the Irish people, and the music of their culture is rich, unique and emotional - beautiful.
John Williams has written a score for Far And Away by reaching back into the Irish spirit. The characters in the story - Joseph and
Shannon - leave Ireland and travel all the way to Oklahoma. But the memory of their homeland travels with them, carried along by
the music so beautifully written, and beautifully played on this soundtrack.
